Ötztal Glacier Road to the Tiefenbach Glacier

The climb up to the Tiefenbach Glacier is one of the most challenging road cycling routes in the Ötztal. From the centre of Sölden, the Ötztal Glacier Road winds its way up into the glacial landscape over a distance of around 16 kilometres and an elevation gain of over 1,600 metres. After the Rettenbach Glacier, the route passes through the 1.8-kilometre-long Rosi-Mittermaier Tunnel to the Tiefenbach Glacier at around 2,800 metres.

With an average gradient of around 11 per cent, the route requires a very good level of fitness and experience of long climbs. The highest point is at 2,830 metres. Bicycle lights are required for the journey through the tunnel, which is poorly lit in places. The glacier road is only accessible during the snow-free summer months.

The official route starts in Sölden. Those setting off directly from the Hotel & Apartment Alpenland first cycle down into the valley towards Sölden and, from there, take the ascent to the Tiefenbach Glacier. The subsequent return journey back up to Obergurgl significantly extends the tour and makes it a particularly challenging day’s ride.

High-altitude cycling training in Tyrol

Obergurgl is situated at an altitude of 1,930 metres, making it an ideal location for high-altitude cycling training. Training and staying overnight at this altitude allows you to build up your endurance and performance in a targeted manner. The lower oxygen levels stimulate the production of red blood cells, which improve oxygen transport.

The rooms on the second floor of the Hotel & Apartment Alpenland are situated at an altitude of 2,000 metres. This means you sleep at altitude (‘Sleep High’) whilst travelling down into the valley to train (‘Train Low’). This combination is regarded as an effective method of altitude training.

The bike bus will transport your bicycle or e-bike on all regular bus services between Imst/Haiming and Obergurgl, free of charge throughout the valley provided you have a valid bus ticket. Book your cycling holiday in Tyrol online or send us a no-obligation enquiry.
